Clay Tiles Project

A Reflection from Dan Dutton:

About a year ago, I started spending my Saturday afternoons teaching women from the Sky Hope Recovery Center about clay, and how to make things out of it.

“Clay is a material so sensitive that it remembers everything that has been done to it," said one of my clay mentors.

Like our bodies and our souls, then.

Together, talking through the stories of their lives as we went, we tackled a very ambitious project. They made the tiles to tile the bathroom at Recovering Joy, and I concocted the glazes.

Chano worked out the pattern of the colors and installed them into this work of collaborative art.

We are grateful to the Snowy Owl Foundation for making this project possible.
