Dan Dutton

Daniel Dutton grew up near Somerset, Kentucky, rooted in the rich soil of Appalachian storytelling, music, and tradition, and those roots have shaped everything he creates. A multidisciplinary artist, songwriter, composer, and filmmaker, Daniel weaves together visual art, music, and narrative to explore the stories that make us human: where we come from, what we carry, and how we find our way through.

He still lives and works in his hometown, with a studio just a stone's throw from the site of the Civil War's Battle of Dutton's Hill — land his own family once called home. That sense of place, memory, and belonging runs through all of his work.

Over the decades, Daniel has created in just about every form imaginable. His visual art has been exhibited at the J.B. Speed Art Museum and 21c Museum. His opera The Stone Man premiered with Kentucky Opera, and his four-part dance opera cycle, The Secret Commonwealth, was broadcast on Kentucky Educational Television. Inspired by the ballad traditions he learned from Appalachian legend Jean Ritchie, he created Ballads of the Barefoot Mind, a series of paintings, recordings, and writings celebrating the old songs and the lives they came from. His work lives in collections at Berea College, Brown-Forman, and beyond.

At his core, Daniel is a listener and a storyteller — someone who believes that art has the power to help us see ourselves more clearly and feel a little less alone.
