Clem Pearson
I am a composer, conductor, and multi-instrumental musician from the Appalachian foothills of Kentucky. I was raised in the American folk and bluegrass music traditions, and my work combines the influence of my folk background with classical-style training in theory and performance technique. I believe that art is fundamentally a way of sharing meaningful experiences with those around us, and I particularly strive to share experiences that elevate our collective humanity: ways of thinking, feeling, and being that move us beyond the everyday gravity of commonplace culture. I am particularly drawn to narratives of introspection, dreamlike soundscapes, and images of flight and space travel. I think the potential of music as a form of storytelling—especially when combined with theatre, poetry, and dance—continues to be one of the great artistic forces of the earth.
I studied music and philosophy at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and then earned my Master’s degree in conducting from Wichita State University. I am currently applying to music programs in composition, and intend to pursue a career as a music teacher and composer in the academic realm. I also plan to collaborate with filmmakers, playwrights, and game designers as I hone my craft.
Clem has decided to study at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Congratulations, Clem!
